An agent should treat any change as an applicant-authorised update, not as permission to invent content or take over the application. A prudent process is to confirm the corrected facts, identify the affected fields or documents, explain the proposed edits and obtain the applicant’s approval before submission. For the personal statement, UCAS advises that it should sound as though the applicant wrote it.
What should an agent check first?
-
The underlying information. The applicant should identify the correction and provide any relevant supporting material. The agent should not guess when information is missing or uncertain.
-
The effect on the rest of the application. A change to one answer may make another statement inaccurate. The agent should flag every potentially affected section rather than silently rewriting it.
-
The applicant’s own voice. Editing for clarity is different from replacing the applicant’s account with the agent’s wording. The personal statement should remain recognisably the applicant’s own, in line with UCAS’s advice.
-
The proposed revision. Additions, removals and changes of emphasis should be made clear to the applicant. Any personal experience, achievement or explanation included in the revision should come from the applicant rather than being invented by the agent.
-
Approval and authority. The applicant should record what was approved and separately confirm what an agent is permitted to discuss or submit under the relevant service terms and institutional instructions.
What if an international qualification is not listed?
If an international qualification is not included in a university’s listed entry requirements, UCAS advises discussing it directly with the institution. The agent should present the qualification accurately, explain the uncertainty and avoid guaranteeing that it will be accepted. The qualification should not be described as equivalent to a listed requirement unless the institution has confirmed that position.
What still needs confirmation?
The cited UCAS statements do not establish a universal correction procedure, a service-specific fee, a deadline or an agent’s contractual responsibilities. Applicants should therefore check the current application instructions, institutional requirements and service terms for themselves. A revised draft or a discussion with a university should not be treated as an acceptance decision unless the institution has expressly confirmed it.
